At The End of The School day

Whilst I fully endorse the introduction of the Australian National Curriculum I remember fondly the days when the school day ended with "story time on the rug". Unfortunately with the ever increasing pressure on teachers to complete all the set work there is no longer time for this special end to the day......... how sad!!
This special time of the day used to be a joint interaction between the teacher and all students, enjoying the love of books and providing many children with the chance of being read to on a regular basis.
My question is do we as educators need to find the time to enjoy books and literacy with our students just for the fun and love of it?
